N-Acetylcysteine, or NAC, is an amino acid form of L-cysteine that is essential for the formation of glutathione, the body's most important antioxidant. In medicine it is used e.g. mucus-relieving cough medicine and in acute poisoning situations to protect the liver from permanent damage.
